Meet an Astronaut Trip

Tuesday 12th July 14 students chosen by the science department for their effort, progress and enthusiasm for science got to go to Chandlers Field Primary School in West Molesey to meet Dr Helen Sharman OBE, the first British astronaut and the first woman to visit the Mir Space Station.

Rydens Enterprise School RES Students

The teachers at Chandlers Field had very kindly invited our students to attend the speech given by Helen and had also asked for them to lead some stalls at their Space Fair afterwards. We were really lucky that our students also got to have individual question and answer time with Helen and then later got signatures and selfies with her.

Here are some quotes from the students who were lucky enough to attend this exciting event:

We were especially selected for our achievements in science, we did some experiments with fizzy drinks for the students using Mentos, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, which they loved. It was a really fun trip.
Dylan (Year 7)

When I met Helen Sharman I realised how hard it is to become an astronaut, you need to be good at science, engineering, languages and be really fit. Helen told us about her training in Russia, it sounded really interesting.
Tom (Year 7)

The talk from Helen Sharman was really interesting, she explained things well and did demonstrations. After the fascinating talk we went outside and set up our RES stall. We had different experiments going on. We were able to get a picture with Helen and a signature. I thoroughly enjoyed the RES Science trip and especially the talk from Helen.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our budding scientists and so big thanks to Chandlers Field staff for organising it and for Mr McLennan for inviting our students to participate, it was a very inspiring afternoon.
