Year 11 English Update

Dear parent/ carer,

We are writing to update you on our plans for year 11 in the final weeks before the English Language and Literature examinations commence.

The March pre-public examination results have now been given back to students and they have looked at what they need to action in order to be even more successful in the final examinations. We were very pleased with their attitude and approach to their studies in the run up to these mocks and were gratified to see that this was reflected in their results, particularly in English Language, where we saw some real gains and improvements with many students’ responses.

An action that we are taking based upon these results is to regroup students for an intensive week of boosters, from Monday 8th May until Friday 12th May. Students will secure and build upon their skills in reading and writing for the grade that they achieved in English Language. These targeted boosters will help to build confidence and competence in meeting the needs of each of the assessment demands for each of the questions and will be a valuable way of securing the best grade possible. Students have been informed of their group today, so that they are ready and prepared for next week.

A reminder of the current interventions available for students is below.

  • Thursday after school sessions from 3pm until 4pm - open to all to attend.
  • Tuesday lunchtime – targeted students who are not yet achieving a grade 4
  • Thursday lunchtime – targeted students aiming to achieve a grade 7 to 9.

Students have been informed of these sessions via the tutor team and will know if they have been invited.

During May half term, we will be running a drop in clinic where students can address any issues that they may have with either of the language papers. This will be held on Tuesday 30th May between 1pm and 3pm in W5. We will also be offering a number of targeted sessions between 10 am and 12pm on the same day and students invited to these will receive letters in due course.

Finally, I would like to thank you for your continued support, especially over the last two years. We are very proud of the hard work that students have invested in English as well as the good progress that they are making and we wish them every success in their summer examinations.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Suzanne Darby
