Year 10 welcome letter

Dear Parent/Carer

As I am sure you are aware, from September 2017 all students at Three Rivers Academy will be in horizontal tutor groups. I am writing to introduce myself as the Year Leader for Year 10 and I am very much looking forward to supporting your son/daughter on their journey through KS4. Last year, in my role as Year Leader for Year 11, I developed a bespoke programme of activities to aid our students to take responsibility for their own progress as well as exploring their post 16 options.

Over the coming academic year Three Rivers Academy will continue to challenge our students to ensure that they make the most of their time in Key Stage 4. In September we will host a Year 10 information evening, the focus is to offer advice from the subject leaders of Maths, English and Science on how to promote the progress of your son/daughter in their subjects. School reports and parents evenings will also provide an invaluable opportunity to review your son/daughter’s progress. We strongly encourage you to attend all such evening events. It is vital that we all celebrate the successes of our students and encourage them to learn from any set-backs that they encounter on their journey through Key Stage 4. I am confident that with open and honest communication and a consistent message from home and school we will continue to ‘Bring out the Best’ in all of our students.

In order to ensure that there is clear communication between home and school there will be a fortnightly Year 10 newsletter. This will include information regarding up-coming events and what you as parents can do to support your son/daughter at this stage in their school career. The form tutor will be your first point of contact in relation to your son/daughter’s overall progress and any pastoral issues. In addition Mrs Dodd will be supporting as Key Stage 4 Manager. Queries regarding individual subjects should be discussed with your son/daughter’s teachers in the first instance.

As well as a clear focus on ensuring good academic progress through reviews of assessments and reports, academic tutoring and revision skills, the Year 10 tutorial programme will also explore future educational and careers opportunities and preparation for work experience.

In addition to the areas mentioned, the Year 10 tutors and I will continue to promote high standards in relation to behaviour, attitude to learning, homework, attendance and uniform.

I enclose with this letter a copy of the new uniform policy for next year. The changes are minor but are important to reflect the new school. All students will be expected to be wearing the new school badge on their blazer from September and also to have purchased the new school PE kit. As a result of student voice feedback we have also adapted the girls’ uniform to an open ‘revere’ collar shirt and no tie, however girls will need to purchase a house colour chevron to be worn under the badge on the blazer. Also following feedback from parents regarding the cold weather we have this year introduced a long sleeve quarter zip PE top which is compulsory but is not required until October half term. We will be continuing to demand the highest standards of uniform next year and ask for your full support in this matter, however if financial support is needed please contact Mrs Mackenzie at school.

I would like to wish you and your child an enjoyable and restful summer and I look forward to working with you in September.

Yours faithfully

Mr R Blackiston
Year Leader
